A Comparison of Item Response Theory And Observed Score DIF Detection Measures For the Graded Response Model

چکیده
This paper provides a review of procedures for detection of differential item functioning (DIF) for item response theory (IRT) and observed score methods for the graded response model. In addition, data from a test anxiety scale were analyzed to examine the congruence among these procedures. Data from Nasser, Takahashi, and Benson (1997) were reanalyzed for purposes of this study. The data were obtained from participants' responses to an Arabic Version of Sarason's (1984) Reactions to Test (RTT) scale. The sample consisted of 421 tenth graders from two Arab high schools in the central district of Israel. Results indicated stronger agreement within IRT methods and within observed score methods than between these two sets of DIF detection methods. A discussion is included focusing on reasons for these similarities and differences. Results of this study can provide useful information about the relationships to expect between various DIF detection methods. (Contains 10 tables and 49 references.) A confirmatory study of Differential Item Functioning on EFL reading comprehension
The present study aimed at investigating DIF sources on an EFL reading comprehension test. Accordingly, 2 DIF detection methods, logistic regression (LR) and item response theory (IRT), were used to flag emergent DIF of 203 (110 females & 93 males) Iranian EFL examinees’ performance on a reading comprehension test. Seven hypothetical DIF sources were examin...
متن کاملA Reexamination of Lord’s Wald Test for Differential Item Functioning Using Item Response Theory and Modern Error Estimation
The detection of differential item functioning (DIF) is an essential step in increasing the validity of a test for all groups. The item response theory (IRT) model comparison approach has been shown to be the most flexible and powerful method for DIF detection; however, it is computationally-intensive, requiring many model-refittings. The Wald test, originally employed by Lord for DIF detection...
متن کاملSelecting the Best Fit Model in Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment: Differential Item Functioning Detection in the Reading Comprehension of the PhD Nationwide Admission Test
This study was an attemptto provide detailed information of the strengths and weaknesses of test takers‟ real ability through cognitive diagnostic assessment, and to detect differential item functioning in each test item. The rationale for using CDA was that it estimates an item‟s discrimination power, whereas clas- sical test theory or item response theory depicts between rather within item mu...
متن کاملAnalysis of differential item functioning in the depression item bank from the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS): An item response theory approach.
The aims of this paper are to present findings related to differential item functioning (DIF) in the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) depression item bank, and to discuss potential threats to the validity of results from studies of DIF. The 32 depression items studied were modified from several widely used instruments. DIF analyses of gender, age and education we...

Goal: Researchers in the field of science education believe that peoplechr(chr('39')39chr('39'))s attitudes about learning will have a significant impact on their future learning and what they learn from science will not be unrelated to their views and attitudes. Accordingly, most questionnaires have been developed to measure attitudes toward science, especially about physics learning attitudes...
